Is this You?

  • "I am not sure where to find hope anymore."
  • "I got into this line of work because it seemed so clear to me that it was right. I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing. Now, I'm not so sure, and I have no idea of what is next."
  • "I'm at a point in my life that I know what used to work doesn't any more. I know there need to be some changes, but I just don't see the way forward."
  • "I used to be able to really feel God in my life. There was such a strong connection. Now I'm not sure God is there at all."

What is described above are all situations that have been voiced to me during spiritual direction. There is something essential about being able to sit with someone and talk about the experience of God. Theresa of Avila walked with St. John of the Cross in this way. St. Clare of Assisi served St. Francis supporting him, and sometimes even strengthening him in times of doubt as he served the people of Assisi.

I believe each our lives is like a "braided cord": one strand is us, seeking God; one is God seeking us; and the third is those who walk along side us. In spiritual direction we seek to heighten our awareness of the presence of the sacred. It is my privilege to have also served as a companion for those seeking to walk with more clarity of purpose, and increased awareness of God's presence in life's journey.
